ODOT Opens I-205 Project Open House

ODOT launched a new online open house Monday looking at the I-205 Improvements project planned for seven miles between Stafford Road and OR 213, including the Abernethy Bridge over the Willamette River.

The online open house can be found at the project web site, www.I205corridor.org, through April 30, and is available in English and Spanish. The site also offers project information in English, Spanish, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Vietnamese, and the opportunity to sign up for project updates.

More than 100,000 vehicles a day use this stretch of road between OR 213 in Oregon City and Stafford Road in West Linn. The bottleneck is the last two-lane section of I-205 and creates nearly seven hours of congestion a day.

The project, now nearing the end of the design phase, will boost our economy by providing safer, more reliable access to work and critical services, even after an earthquake or other major disaster.

Benefits include:

  • Reducing congestion and travel times. The additional lane will make travel faster and more predictable, reducing daily congestion by 4.75 hours.
  • Increase safety. Improved interchanges and safer on and off-ramps will reduce crashes.
  • Building earthquake-ready bridges. Adding a third lane along I-205 and seismically strengthening the Abernethy Bridge and eight smaller bridges. This will reinforce the I-205 lifeline that keep the freeway passable and ensure supplies and critical services can reach the metro area in an emergency.

In addition, this effort will help reduce congestion in the Portland area, one of ODOT’s strategic goals.

The I-205 Improvements Project is part of ODOT’s Comprehensive Congestion Management and Mobility Plan to reduce congestion, while also making travel times shorter and more predictable throughout the region.
