Souels' wife, Peggy, decided the carousel's last day will be Sunday, September 15. Per News4Jax:
"Peggy Sourels told News4Jax that St. Augustine has been wonderful and thanked everyone for supporting the carousel for 25 years, but she's too old to handle it and plans to "bring the carousel home" to where she lives in Port Charlotte."

Almost everyone who visits downtown St. Augustine knows the twinkling lights and nostalgic music of the J&S Carousel in Davenport Park. It's hard to say no to those $1 horsey rides! Sadly, the local landmark might shut down for good on Sunday.
St. Augustine's city manager found out carousel owner James Souels passed away a few days ago and his widow has plans to tear down the ride that's been open since 1992. My heart is breaking for her loss and but also because that carousel is a piece of my childhood! The city is already looking at options on how to keep it open.
