Your Travel Guide for The Ultimate Tequila Trail

From frat's and bars to high-end luxury, tequila spans the globe as a fan favorite beverage. In celebration of this drink that can make any night just right, Thrillist has put together their ultimate Tequila Trail Travel Guide. Here's the highlights!

They recommend starting your trip in Guadalajara, Jalisco's capital city. Antonio Rodriguez, director of production at Patron, recommends checking out the local cafes, bars, street vendors, and live entertainment along Chapultepec. "You can find the perfect balance between traditions like mariachis, Charros, tequila, and Mexican food, and vibrant people."

Guadalajara is known for traditional Mexican cuisine and gastronomy. Barry Augus, founder and CEO of Tres Agaves Tequila, recommends heading to Karne Garibaldi and ordering the beef stew. "But be ready to eat as soon as you take your seat, because they've held the Guinness World Record for fastest food service since 1996."

You can get your tequila tour started at La Tequila Cocina Mexican where they have over 200 different tequilas and dozens of other agave spirits ranging from Mezcal to Raicilla. Make sure to try the vegetarian Chile en Nogada and the fried crickets.

Another venue to check out is the very classy Alcalde Restaurant. With floor to ceiling windows, you have a view into the kitchen where you can see Executive Chef Paco Ruano make his blended mole.

Guadalajara has an amazing nightlife scene. Be cure to take the time to check out the mariachis and lucha libre. Jalisco is credited as the birthplace of mariachi. Plaza de los Mariachis offers open-air shows. For giant margaritas and colorful decor, stop by Casa Bariachi. 

Mexican Lucha libre shows are famous in this region. The Arena Coliseo is jam packed for Tuesday and Sunday night shows. The audience gets just as lively as the performers.

For more standard nightlife, check out Bruna, a mixology bar; Nadim Rooftop for a bit of disco-ball-lit dancing; or Fat Charlie for speakeasy date night vibes.

After enjoying city life, head off to the sunset hills to enjoy the moonlit volcano fields and pineapple wind drifting from the local distilleries. The town of Tequila is about an hour away from downtown Guadalajara. There are two luxury trains offering boozy day trips. The Tequila Express sets off to the Herradura distillery in Amatitan for a tour, tasting, and lunch every weekend. The Jose Cuervo Express offers a couple different high roller experiences to choose from all including a visit to their production facility in La Rojena.

There are some magnificent hotels to stay at while in Tequila, but Thrillest recommends staying at Mundo Cuervo's Hotel Solar de las Animas Ramon. They offer an airy, amenity-filled oasis with a central pool, rooftop bar, gym, restaurant, and is located just a few steps away from the historic downtown area. 

Tequila also is home to two tequila museums, Sauza Family Museum and National Museum of Tequila. After learning all about the history of Tequila, stroll over to the rustic La Posts de Cerrillos, which has a margarita filled outdoor patio, or to Cholula La Fonda, home of Cholula hot sauce. If you only have tike for one spot in Tequila, Thrillest recommends La Capilla. They claim that it is "the king of all dive bars" with a barebones structure and and their legendary signature cocktail, the Batanga.

Now it's time to hit the distilleries. You can either join a guided tour or head out on your own. For a guided tour, Thrillest recommends Experience Tequila. they have a variety of multi day excursions with packed itineraries and knowledgeable guides. If you plan to head out on your own, check out Hacienda La Cofradia, Casa Suaza, Jose Cuervo, and Tequila Herradura, which all offer daily tours. Be sure to book ahead for La Altena distillery and Hacienda de Oro.
