The Number of US Mass Shootings This Year Will Shock You

Thursday's shooting at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, California, was the latest in at least 30 school attacks that resulted in deaths or injuries, a gun safety group reports. The group Everytown reports there have been a total of 84 separate incidents involving gunfire at schools so far in 2019, 20 less than 2018's total. Of those incidents, 10 involved fatalities. That includes the Saugus High School shooting, which left two dead and four injured. The Everytown report notes suicides and accidents involving guns at schools were not included in the tally. All totaled, mass shooting incidents in 2019 number 365 so far, according to a separate report from the Gun Violence Archive. That number includes incidents in which at least four people were killed by gunfire, not including the shooter. Are you shocked to learn there have been 365 mass shootings -- one for each day of the year -- before the year is even finished? Are they becoming so common we don't talk about them as much?
