Portland Named "Worst Drivers By City" In America

What's the Best US City to Drive In? The best U.S. city to drive in, fittingly, is the one that produces most American cars. Detroit tops the list of "Best Driving Cities in America," according to a survey released Monday by QuoteWizard. The website, which compiled the list based on the number of accidents, issued speeding tickets, DUIs and other citations, calls the Motor City "a mainstay among the best driving cities in the country." Louisville, Kentucky, comes in second on the list, followed by Chicago and Miami. Rounding out the top five is Grand Rapids, according to QuoteWizard. On the flip-side, Portland (Oregon) was named the worst driving city, followed by Boise and Virginia Beach.

Portland

After cracking the top 10 worst last year, Portland steadily made its way to the top this year. What propelled Portland to the top this year? It was the most leadfooted city in the country with the highest rate of speeding tickets. Hard to believe speeding is the issue in Portland given the brutal gridlock traffic on I-5. With Portland’s being such a cycling city, the remainder of its residents who get behind the wheel must truly be the worst of the worst drivers.

We here at QuoteWizard set out every year to see which cities have the worst drivers in America. We analyzed data from millions of insurance quotes from drivers in the top 75 cities in the country. We evaluated cities on four factors to determine overall driver quality and took a composite ranking of overall incidents. Incidents include:

  • Accidents
  • Speeding Tickets
  • DUIs
  • Citations (running a red light, using a cellphone while driving, etc.)

What's your biggest complaint about drivers in your area? Besides rush hour, when is the worst time to be on the road?
