The average American citizen drinks 50 gallons of sugary beverages a year. 41% of children ages 2-11 and 62% of teens aged 12-17 drink a soda every single day according to CBS Sacramento. In another study it showed that 1 in 12 adults residing in California had been diagnosed with diabetes, which accounts for around 2.5 million people.

In order to combat these numbers, legislature in California have introduced a new bill that would ban Big Gulps from 7-11 and any drink larger than 16 oz. The bill would ban business owners from selling cups with removable lids larger than 16 oz in their stores. Anyone caught violating this rule will be subject to a $200 fine for a first offence, $500 for a second, and $1000 for every violation after that. The reasoning being that the drinks usually sold in these cups are full of sugary beverages or soda.

Nutritionists have said that a 20 oz fountain soda has around 16 teaspoons of sugar, way above the healthy average, which is 5-9 teaspoons.
