What was apparently a case of meningococcal disease has claimed the life of 17-year-old Jake Parkhurst. He was a junior at Central Catholic High School. Over the weekend, he began to experience flu-like symptoms and by Monday he was admitted to a hospital. He died within a day.

Health officials suspect it was meningococcal disease. It's a fast moving disease that could infect anyone who had close contact with Parkhurst. Those people are being identified and given a treatment of antibiotics as a precaution.

Central Catholic High School Principal John Garrow made the announcement Wednesday morning. He read a statement from the family: "We are all very deeply saddened and heartbroken at this time," the statement said. "We ask that you respect our privacy while we grieve our loss." Counselors have been made available for students and staff.
