A five-year-old boy was wounded in an apparent gang related shooting Tuesday night at the Laurel Place apartments at Southeast 125th and Powell Boulevard.
The suspect fired several rounds into the apartments. Windows were broken and rounds hit walls inside of apartments.
The boy was hit in the leg and is expected to recover.
The Portland Police Gang Team and the Gun Task Force are investigating this and other gang and gun cases.
They are asking the public's assistance in these ongoing cases. Investigators hope that additional witnesses will come forward and provide information on this incident and other recent gang-related crimes.
Portland Mayor Charlie Hales issued the following statement about the shooting:
While I am relieved to learn that the child’s injuries are non-life threatening, I’m horrified and outraged by the act of violence itself. Gun violence on the streets of our city is a public safety and a public health crisis. Everyone in our community must rise and face this issue. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family victimized by this terrible event. And I ask everyone in our community to take a stand on the issues of gang violence prevention and illegal gun violence by coming forward to provide information on the shooters. If community members will cooperate, we can get these dangerous, reckless criminals off the streets.
